日本に在留する外国人の方が一時的に出国し、その後、出国前と同一の在留資格でそのまま再入国するために必要な手続きが再入国許可申請です。

日本出国前に再入国許可を取らなければ、日本出国の時点で、それまで有していた在留資格と在留期間が消滅してしまいます。

その場合、出国前と同一の在留資格で入国しようとすると、再度ビザの取得、上陸許可手続きを一からやり直さなければならなくなってしまいます（最悪の場合、許可がおりないおそれもあります）。

一方で、出国の日から1年以内に日本に再入国する予定の方は（在留期限が、1年を経過する前に到来する場合は当該期限まで）『みなし再入国制度』という、より簡便な制度で再入国することも可能です（ただし、みなし再入国の対象とならない人がいるので注意が必要です）。

If mid-long term residents are thinking about leaving Japan temporarily and re-entering with the same status of residence as they left, they need to apply for Re-entry Permit (Sai Nyu-koku Kyoka).

Unless obtaining Re-entry permit before leaving Japan, their status and permitted period of stay will be lapsed.

If they want to come back in Japan with the same status of residence in such cases, they need to take all the procedures (applying for visa, and status of residence) again (and what is worse, the permission of status of residence is not guaranteed).

On the other hand, mid-long term residents who are re-entering Japan within 1 year from the date of departure (if their permitted period of stay expire before 1 year from the date of departure, they must re-enter before the day of expiry) can use “Special Re-entry Permit system” (Minashi Sai Nyu-koku). However, you have to be careful that some mid-long term residents cannot be subject to Special Re-entry Permit system.
